Cuisine American
- 1 cup ice crushed or cubed
- 1/2 oz fresh lime juice about half a lime
- 6 oz lemon-lime soda well chilled; use diet for less sugar
- 1/2 oz grenadine for the red drizzle
- 1 lime wheel for garnish
Fill a short glass with ice and tuck the lime wheel against the side of the glass.
Add the lime juice, then pour in the lemon-lime soda and give it one gentle stir.
Slowly drizzle the grenadine down the inside of the glass or over the back of a spoon. It sinks and leaves red streaks, like a vampire got there first.
Serve right away, before the red fully mixes in. Stir it up later if you want it all pink.
How to order it at a bar or soda shop: Ask, "Could I get Sprite with fresh lime and a little grenadine drizzled on top? No alcohol, please." No grenadine? Ask for a splash of cranberry juice instead. At a soda shop, ask for lemon-lime soda with lime and grenadine (or cherry syrup).
Allergen notes: this drink has no dairy, nuts, gluten ingredients or eggs, but always check your labels. Many grenadines are made with corn syrup and artificial red dye (like Red 40). If you avoid dyes, look for a grenadine made with real pomegranate.
Party batch: for 8 drinks, mix 4 oz lime juice into a 2-liter bottle's worth of soda in a punch bowl right before serving. Let each guest drizzle their own grenadine into their cup.
Make it your own: swap in ginger ale for a little spice, or drop in a gummy worm or a frozen blackberry for extra creepiness.
