How to Rim a Glass (Sugar, Salt, Tajín, Candy)
Confession: I will absolutely judge a drink by its rim. A sparkly sugar edge or a little chili-lime crunch turns a plain glass of juice into a Situation.
Heads up: this post has a few Amazon links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. It keeps the ice cubes coming.
Good news, it takes about 60 seconds and zero bartender school. Here’s how I rim a glass with sugar, salt, Tajín and candy, plus the chili-lime mango cooler I make when I want to show off.
What you need
- Something sticky: a citrus wedge, simple syrup, honey or light corn syrup.
- Something to dip in: sugar, coarse salt, Tajín or crushed candy.
- Two small plates: one for the sticky stuff (if it’s syrup), one for the rim mix. Plates wider than your glass work best.
How to rim a glass (the basic method)
- Chill the glass in the freezer for about 10 minutes if you have time. Cold glasses hold a rim better.
- Spread your rim mix evenly on a small plate.
- Wet the outer edge only. Run a citrus wedge around the outside of the rim, or dab syrup on with your fingertip. Skip the inside so the rim doesn’t slide into your drink.
- Dip at an angle. Hold the glass sideways and roll the outer edge through the mix, like a tiny wheel. Don’t just smoosh it straight down.
- Tap off the extras and let it set for a minute before you pour.
- Pour carefully into the middle so you don’t wash your hard work away.
Pro move: rim only half the glass. Now you (or your guest) can sip from the plain side whenever you want a break.
Sugar rim
Lemon or lime wedge, or simple syrup, then granulated or sanding sugar. Sanding sugar has bigger crystals and sparkles more. Mix in a little citrus zest if you’re feeling fancy. Perfect on lemonades.
Salt rim
Lime wedge, then coarse or kosher salt. Skip fine table salt: it’s way saltier per bite and goes on clumpy. Great on limeades and grapefruit sodas.
Tajín (chili-lime) rim
Lime wedge, then Tajín or another chili-lime seasoning. Want it sweet-spicy? Mix it about half and half with sugar. For extra cling, some folks use chamoy (a sweet, tangy Mexican sauce) instead of lime. It’s made for mango, watermelon and pineapple drinks.
Candy rim
Citrus juice is too thin here. Use honey or light corn syrup so the chunky bits actually stick. Then dip in crushed hard candy, sprinkles or colored sugar. Crush candy in a zip-top bag with a rolling pin, and keep the pieces small. Kids go feral for this one.
How to order a rimmed drink out
Most bars that make margaritas already have salt, sugar and often Tajín behind the bar. Just ask: “Can I get a virgin margarita (or a limeade) with a Tajín rim, no alcohol?” Mexican restaurants are a great bet for chili-lime rims. At a soda shop or cafe, menus vary, so ask whether they do sugar or candy rims before you get your heart set on one.
Tools to use: Tajín for the spicy rims, sanding sugar for the sparkly ones, and a glass rimmer tray so your counter doesn’t end up looking like a beach, all on Amazon. Any brand works.
