Red, White & Blue Mocktails for Veterans Day Gatherings

Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11, 2026, and if you’re hosting a get-together for the veterans in your life, I’ve got the drinks covered. Red, white and blue, zero alcohol, all the fun.

Quick note before the berries start flying: Veterans Day honors everyone who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces. (Memorial Day is the one that honors those who died in service.) So this is about saying thank you, out loud, with good food and good company.

And good company means a drink for everybody. Not everyone at the table drinks alcohol, and nobody should be stuck sipping tap water while everyone else gets something festive.

My star of the show is a layered Stars & Stripes Cooler: red berry on the bottom, creamy white coconut in the middle, bright blue on top. It looks like a magic trick. It is actually just sugar doing physics. Then I’ve got 6 more patriotic mocktails for when you want something different.

Why you’ll love these patriotic mocktails

  • The layers are the wow: three stripes in one glass, and it takes about 10 minutes.
  • No fancy gear: a tall glass, a spoon and crushed ice. That’s the kit.
  • Everyone can have one: alcohol-free, caffeine-free as written, and dairy-free as written.
  • Easy to scale: prep the red and white layers ahead and build glasses to order like a pro.

How the layers work (sugar is the secret)

Liquids with more sugar are heavier, so they sink. Liquids with less sugar float on top. That’s the whole trick.

  • Red (bottom): berry syrup is the sweetest, so it goes in first and stays put.
  • White (middle): sweetened cream of coconut thinned with water. Sweet, but less sweet than the syrup.
  • Blue (top): a zero-sugar blue sports drink. Almost no sugar means it floats like a champ.

Crushed ice is your secret helper. It slows the pour and keeps the layers from crashing into each other. Pour slow over the back of a spoon and you’re golden.

6 more red, white and blue mocktail ideas

1. Berry Flag Sparkler

Drop a handful of blueberries, raspberries and sliced strawberries into a tall glass, add a splash of cranberry juice and top with chilled sparkling water or lemon-lime soda. Freeze the berries first and they double as ice cubes. Easiest flag in the world.

2. Berrylicious Blast, dressed up

My Berrylicious Blast Mocktail is already a berry party. Serve it with a skewer of blueberries and raspberries across the rim and a little cloud of coconut whip on top for the white stripe.

3. Cranberry Cream Float

My Spiced Cranberry Ginger Ale (Dirty) is already red with a white coconut cream float. Toss a few blueberries on top and boom, it’s in uniform.

4. Three-Puree Sparkler

Spoon a little raspberry puree into the bottom of a glass, add ice and lemonade, then float a few blueberries on top. My guide to fruit purees in mocktails shows you how to make the puree in minutes.

5. Patriotic Party Punch

Fill a punch bowl with cranberry juice and lemon-lime soda (about half and half), float an ice ring packed with blueberries and raspberries, and add a few scoops of vanilla ice cream or coconut sorbet right before serving. Heads up: ice cream contains milk.

6. Red, White & Blue Hot Chocolate

November can be chilly, so here’s a cozy one. Make white hot chocolate, then sprinkle crushed freeze-dried strawberries and blueberries on top. It’s sweet, pretty and warm for an outdoor gathering. Most white chocolate contains milk, so check labels.

Tips for hosting a crowd

  • Prep ahead: mix the red layer and the white layer up to a day early and keep them covered in the fridge. Stir the white layer again before using.
  • Build to order: fill glasses with crushed ice and let guests watch you pour the layers. Instant party trick.
  • Set up a station: my guide on how to set up a mocktail bar walks you through tools, glasses and garnishes.
  • Make it about the guests: a handwritten “thank you for your service” tag on each glass is a small touch that goes a long way.

Allergy and dye notes

  • Coconut: the white layer is cream of coconut. The FDA dropped coconut from its list of tree nuts that count as major allergens in 2025, but some people with nut allergies still react to it. If that’s you or a guest, check with a doctor and read labels, or try the coconut-free swap in the recipe notes.
  • Dairy: none as written. The punch and hot chocolate ideas above do contain milk.
  • Food dyes: most blue sports drinks get their color from artificial dyes. For a dye-free blue, use chilled unsweetened butterfly pea flower tea (just keep lemon away from it, or it turns purple).
  • Caffeine: none as written, but check the label on your sports drink.

Stars & Stripes Layered Cooler

A layered red, white and blue mocktail: strawberry grenadine on the bottom, creamy coconut in the middle and blue sports drink on top, built over crushed ice. Alcohol-free, ready in about 10 minutes.

Cuisine American
Servings 1 drink

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup frozen strawberries thawed, or fresh hulled strawberries
  • 1 oz grenadine or raspberry syrup 2 tbsp; this sweet syrup keeps the red layer on the bottom
  • 3 tbsp cream of coconut sweetened (the kind for pina coladas, stirred well; not coconut milk)
  • 3 tbsp cold water to thin the cream of coconut
  • 4 oz blue zero-sugar sports drink 1/2 cup, chilled; zero-sugar matters so it floats
  • crushed ice to fill a 12 to 14 oz tall glass
  • blueberries raspberries and a halved strawberry (on a cocktail pick, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Make the red layer: mash or blend the strawberries with the grenadine until mostly smooth. Pour it into the bottom of a tall 12 to 14 oz glass.
  • Pack the glass to the top with crushed ice.
  • Make the white layer: whisk the cream of coconut with the cold water until smooth. Slowly pour it over the back of a spoon held just above the ice so it settles on top of the red.
  • Add the blue layer: pour the blue sports drink (chill it in the fridge ahead of time) very slowly over the back of the spoon so it sits on top of the white.
  • Garnish with a pick of blueberries, raspberries and a halved strawberry. Serve right away and stir before sipping if you like it blended.

Notes

How to order it at a bar or soda shop: At a soda shop (Swig, Sodalicious and friends), ask: "Can I get a blue raspberry soda with strawberry syrup in the bottom and coconut cream, layered and not stirred?" Menus vary, so ask what syrups they carry. At a bar or restaurant, ask for "grenadine in the bottom, then pina colada mix, then a blue sports drink or blue raspberry soda on top, over crushed ice, no alcohol." One big heads up: blue curacao is a liqueur. If a bartender offers it, ask for non-alcoholic blue curacao syrup instead or skip it.
Allergens: contains coconut (cream of coconut). The FDA no longer lists coconut as a major-allergen tree nut (2025 update), but some people with nut allergies react to it, so check with your doctor if you're allergic to tree nuts or coconut. No dairy as written. Coconut-free swap: lemonade mixed with 1 tbsp simple syrup gives you a pale (not bright white) middle stripe.
Dye-free blue: swap the sports drink for chilled unsweetened butterfly pea flower tea. Keep citrus out of it or it turns purple.
For a crowd: for 6 drinks, blend 1 1/2 cups strawberries with 3/4 cup grenadine, and whisk 1 cup plus 2 tbsp cream of coconut with 1 cup plus 2 tbsp water. Build each glass to order with 3 cups of blue sports drink total.
