Spiced Cranberry Ginger Ale (Dirty)

Friday dirty soda drop, and this week I gave plain old ginger ale a full fall makeover. Cranberries, cinnamon, orange, and a cloud of coconut cream. It cleans up nice.

Ginger ale is the drink everyone’s grandma swears by, so I figured it deserved a glow-up. A dirty ginger ale is just ginger ale plus syrup plus cream, and it is way more fun than it has any right to be.

This one is tart cranberry, warm cinnamon and a squeeze of orange swirled through fizzy ginger ale over pebble ice, then topped with a fluffy coconut cream float. It looks like a Thanksgiving centerpiece and takes 2 minutes.

Why you’ll love it

  • 2-minute build: syrup, ice, ginger ale, cream. That’s the whole show.
  • Tastes like the holidays: tart cranberry and cinnamon meet ginger’s little kick, and the orange keeps it bright.
  • Thanksgiving table ready: it’s red, it’s pretty, and the kids and the non-drinkers get something way more exciting than water.
  • Dairy-free as written: coconut cream makes the float. Half-and-half works too if dairy is fine for you.

How to order it

Soda shop (Swig, Sodalicious and friends): “Can I get a ginger ale with cranberry syrup, a splash of orange and coconut cream?” Not every shop has ginger ale or cranberry on the menu, so ask what they carry. Lemon-lime soda with cranberry and coconut cream is a solid backup.

Cocktail bar or restaurant: “Ginger ale on crushed or pebble ice with a splash of cranberry juice and a little cream on top, no alcohol, please.” Bars almost always have ginger ale and cranberry juice for mixing, so this one is easy.

Coffee shop: if they sell ginger ale, grab one with a cup of ice and ask for a pump of cinnamon or brown sugar syrup and a splash of cream on the side. Add a little cranberry juice at home if you have it.

Pro move: say “light ice” so there’s room for the cream float.

Tips for the best pour

  • Make the syrup ahead. The spiced cranberry syrup takes about 10 minutes and keeps in the fridge for up to 1 week, which makes every drink after the first one a 2-minute job.
  • Short on time? Skip the homemade syrup and use 1 tbsp store-bought cranberry syrup plus a tiny pinch of ground cinnamon.
  • Pour slow. Tilt the cup and pour the ginger ale down the side so it doesn’t fizz all over your counter. Ask me how I know.
  • Fluffy float trick: stir or whisk the coconut cream for a few seconds until smooth before spooning it on top. Thick canned coconut cream works best.
  • Want more ginger? Use a spicy ginger beer instead of ginger ale. It’s bolder and less sweet.
  • Garnish like you mean it: a few fresh cranberries, an orange wheel and a cinnamon stick. The cinnamon stick doubles as a stirrer.

Allergy and caffeine notes

  • Coconut: the float is coconut cream. The FDA dropped coconut from its list of tree nuts that count as major allergens in 2025, but some people with nut allergies still react to it. If you’re allergic to tree nuts or coconut, check with your doctor and read labels, or use an oat-based creamer instead.
  • Dairy: none as written. If you swap in half-and-half or heavy cream, it contains milk.
  • Caffeine: most ginger ales are caffeine-free, but check the label on yours.
  • Fresh cranberries: they’re a garnish. They’re safe to eat, just very tart, so consider yourself warned.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen cranberries for the spiced cranberry syrup (makes about 1/3 cup, enough for 4 or 5 drinks)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar for the syrup
  • 1/4 cup water for the syrup
  • 1 cinnamon stick for the syrup
  • 1 tbsp spiced cranberry syrup or store-bought cranberry syrup plus a tiny pinch of ground cinnamon
  • 2 oz cranberry juice cocktail 1/4 cup, chilled
  • 1 tbsp fresh orange juice about 1/4 of an orange
  • 8 oz ginger ale 1 cup, chilled; or ginger beer for more kick
  • 2 tbsp coconut cream stirred smooth; or half-and-half (contains milk)
  • pebble ice or crushed ice to fill the cup
  • fresh cranberries, orange wheel and cinnamon stick for garnish

Instructions

  • Make the syrup (one time): add the cranberries, sugar, water and cinnamon stick to a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer and cook 5 to 7 minutes, until the berries pop. Mash them gently, simmer 1 more minute, then strain through a fine sieve and let cool. Keeps in the fridge up to 1 week.
  • In a 16 to 20 oz glass, stir together 1 tbsp spiced cranberry syrup, the cranberry juice and the orange juice.
  • Fill the glass with pebble ice.
  • Tilt the glass and slowly pour in the ginger ale. Give it one gentle stir so the red swirls up through the soda.
  • Stir the coconut cream until smooth and spoon it over the top.
  • Garnish with a few fresh cranberries, an orange wheel and a cinnamon stick. Sip right away.

Notes

How to order it at a bar or soda shop: At a soda shop (Swig, Sodalicious, etc.), say: "Ginger ale with cranberry syrup, a splash of orange and coconut cream." If they don't carry ginger ale, lemon-lime soda with cranberry and coconut cream is a great backup. At a bar or restaurant, ask for "ginger ale on pebble or crushed ice with a splash of cranberry juice and a little cream on top, no alcohol." Say "light ice" so the cream has room to float.
Allergens: contains coconut (coconut cream). The FDA no longer lists coconut as a major-allergen tree nut (2025 update), but some people with nut allergies react to it, so check with your doctor if you're allergic to tree nuts or coconut, or use an oat-based creamer. No dairy as written; half-and-half contains milk.
Caffeine: most ginger ales are caffeine-free; check your label.
Make it lighter: use diet or zero-sugar ginger ale and light cranberry juice.
Batch it: for 6 drinks, stir 6 tbsp syrup, 1 1/2 cups cranberry juice and 6 tbsp orange juice in a pitcher. Pour about 1/3 cup into each iced glass, then top with ginger ale and coconut cream.
