Veterans Day Gathering Ideas: Patriotic Mocktails, Decorations & Hosting Essentials

Veterans Day is Wednesday, November 11, 2026. It’s a day to thank everyone who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and one of the nicest ways to do that is to pull up some chairs, feed people well and say it out loud: thank you.

If you’re hosting, this guide has you covered. You’ll get three red, white and blue mocktails that everyone at the table can enjoy, plus a simple plan for a patriotic mocktail station that runs itself so you can spend your time with your guests instead of behind the counter.

A quick word on tone: this is a day of gratitude. Keep the decorations cheerful and tidy, keep the focus on the veterans you’re celebrating, and the rest falls into place.

3 patriotic mocktails for your gathering

1. Stars & Stripes Layered Cooler

The showstopper. Strawberry grenadine on the bottom, creamy cream of coconut in the middle and a zero-sugar blue sports drink on top, built over crushed ice. Get the full recipe for the Stars & Stripes Layered Cooler. Allergens: contains coconut. No dairy as written. Most blue sports drinks use artificial dyes.

2. Berry Flag Sparkler (recipe card below)

The easy one. Red and blue berries in a sparkling cranberry-lime soda with a white sugar rim. It scales up nicely in a pitcher or drink dispenser, so it’s the one to batch for a crowd. Allergens: none of the major allergens as written; check your soda and juice labels.

3. Spiced Cranberry Ginger Ale, red, white and blue style

My Spiced Cranberry Ginger Ale (Dirty) is already red with a white coconut cream float. Drop a few blueberries on top and it’s in uniform. Allergens: contains coconut (or half-and-half, which contains milk, if you use that swap).

How to set up a patriotic mocktail station

A drink station means guests can help themselves, refills happen without you, and the table doubles as decoration. Here’s how to set one up, piece by piece.

  • Start with the table. A stars and stripes runner down the middle sets the theme instantly and protects the table from drips. This 13 x 72 inch Artoid Mode stars and stripes table runner (on Amazon) fits a table that seats 4 to 6, per the listing, and it’s polyester and machine washable. The listing also offers other lengths if your table is bigger. Measure first.
  • Batch the easy drink. Mix the Berry Flag Sparkler base ahead in a pitcher with a lid so it can chill in the fridge. A 2-quart glass pitcher like this 64 oz Glabotoil glass pitcher with lid (on Amazon) holds about 6 servings of the base plus soda, and you can see the berries through the glass.
  • Let guests serve themselves. For bigger groups, a drink dispenser keeps the line moving. This FineDine 1 gallon glass drink dispenser 2-pack with stands (on Amazon) gives you two: one for the Berry Flag Sparkler and one for ice water. Add the soda in small batches so it stays fizzy, and set a small towel or tray under the spigot.
  • Cups: any cups you already have work fine. Clear glasses or plain white or blue cups let the red and blue drinks do the decorating, and you’ll want clear glasses for the layered cooler so guests can see the stripes.
  • Napkins by the drinks. Stack a few Beistle patriotic 5 x 5 inch beverage napkins (on Amazon) next to the cups to add the flag theme to the table. They’re 2-ply and come 16 to a pack, so grab two packs for a bigger crowd.
  • Say thank you, out loud. Hang a banner over the station so the reason for the gathering is front and center. This pre-strung Thank You Veterans glitter banner (on Amazon) is about 41 inches wide, per the listing, which suits a wall or the front edge of a table.
  • Add a little color overhead. Twist red, white and blue streamers along the table edge or above the station. This NICROLANDEE 8-roll red, white and blue crepe streamer set (on Amazon) includes navy, red, white and metallic silver rolls. Keep crepe paper away from the ice bucket, since the listing notes it can fade or tear when wet.

Shipping tip: delivery dates vary by item, seller and where you live. Check the delivery date on each listing before you order, especially if you’re shopping close to November 11. Anything that won’t make it in time can be swapped for what you already have at home.

Berry Flag Sparkler

An easy red, white and blue mocktail: raspberries, strawberries and blueberries in sparkling cranberry-lime soda, served in a glass with a white sugar rim. Alcohol-free and ready in about 5 minutes.

Cuisine American
Servings 1 drink

Ingredients

  • 1 lime wedge to wet the rim
  • 1 tbsp white sanding sugar or granulated sugar for the rim
  • 1/4 cup frozen blueberries they double as ice cubes
  • 1/4 cup raspberries fresh or frozen
  • 2 strawberries hulled and sliced
  • 2 oz cranberry juice cocktail 1/4 cup, chilled
  • 1 tbsp fresh lime juice about 1/2 lime
  • 6 oz lemon-lime soda 3/4 cup, chilled; or sparkling water for less sweet
  • ice to fill the glass

Instructions

  • Rim the glass: rub the lime wedge around the rim of a 12 to 14 oz glass, then dip the rim into a saucer of sanding sugar.
  • Drop the raspberries and sliced strawberries into the glass, then fill it about halfway with ice.
  • Pour in the cranberry juice cocktail and lime juice.
  • Top with the chilled lemon-lime soda, pouring slowly so it doesn't fizz over.
  • Spoon the frozen blueberries on top so they float near the surface. Serve right away.

Notes

For a pitcher (about 6 drinks): stir together 1 1/2 cups cranberry juice cocktail and 6 tbsp lime juice in a 64 oz pitcher and chill. Right before serving, add 1 1/2 cups raspberries and sliced strawberries and 4 1/2 cups chilled lemon-lime soda. Add the blueberries to each glass. For a 1 gallon dispenser, double everything and add the soda in two batches so it stays fizzy.
Allergens: none of the major allergens as written. Check the labels on your juice and soda. Caffeine-free if your soda is caffeine-free (most lemon-lime sodas are, but check).
Less sweet: use sparkling water instead of soda and skip the sugar rim.

A few hosting touches that mean a lot

  • Ask, then listen. If a veteran at your table wants to share a story, give them the floor. If they don’t, that’s fine too.
  • A small thank-you note: a handwritten tag on a glass or by a place setting is simple and personal.
  • Drinks for everyone: having good alcohol-free options means nobody is left holding plain water, whether they don’t drink, are driving home, or just want something fun.
  • Prep ahead: mix drink bases the night before and keep them covered in the fridge. Add anything fizzy right before serving.

Allergy and label notes

  • Coconut: the Stars & Stripes Cooler and the Cranberry Ginger Ale use coconut. The FDA no longer lists coconut as a major-allergen tree nut (2025 update), but some people with nut allergies react to it, so ask your guests.
  • Dairy: none in the three drinks as written. The half-and-half swap for the ginger ale contains milk.
  • Dyes: blue sports drinks usually use artificial dyes. The Berry Flag Sparkler gets its color from fruit.
  • Caffeine: none as written, but check soda labels.
